What is Thatcham approval?

Thatcham Approved Vehicle Alarm Systems

The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre (MIRRC) is more commonly known as Thatcham. Thatcham has been testing and approving the motor industry's vehicle security systems since 1992. Many insurers now insist on the installation of security devices from Thatcham's approved product list before they will insure certain vehicles. You can also make savings on your insurance by installing Thatcham approved products.

All Thatcham products installed by Rutland Communications have exceeded the stringent testing procedures and standards required.

The insurance industry recognises the following Thatcham Approved categories.

  • Category 1 = Alarm/immobiliser systems
  • Category 2 = Immobilisation systems
  • Category 2:1 = Alarm systems that upgrade existing Category 2 immobilisers to a Category 1 alarm/immobiliser system
  • Category 2:1 LCV = Alarm systems that upgrade existing LCV (light commercial vehicle) Category 2 immobilisers to an LCV Category 1 alarm/immobiliser system
